Talking

BLM protest

When I was at the protest, an ALM person came over and started talking. Someone suggested folks should turn their backs to avoid giving him a platform. But what I saw wasn't someone there to fight but rather to talk. I'm all about that.

We always hope this . . .

UD Quote: "David Dennis (left), 42, of Sonora, speaks to Olivia Brown (wearing facemask), 28, and her fiance, Michael Crisp (blue shirt), 29, both of Sonora, about their experiences with racism as an interracial couple living in Tuolumne County during a protest held on Sunday at Courthouse Square. We always hope this kind of dialogue pops up but I'll admit, I didn't expect it. There's a lot of emotion and I just wanted to make sure it didn't boil over. But 20 minutes passed, and then again, and then again. And they were all still having conversations. Then came the unbelievable:

A man changed his mind. He said that instead of "all lives matter," what he really meant was "equality matters" and that he had really learned from their stories. Wow. That's huge.

First-hand, I saw these conversations on both sides of the street be productive and frank, and it's really encouraging. So far as I know, I believe that BLM activists have a meeting scheduled with local law enforcement to talk about protocols and procedures locally. And there were even discussions of having several representatives from each side have a public conversation.

People who disagree. Talking. How great is that?

Great coverage, Alex, and a shout-out for being out there at the events. Also to Joe, Guy, and BJ Hanson who I've also seen covering the event. Shout out to our local hard-working journalists.
